Time: Evening Weather: Overcast Warnings: None. Characters: [OPEN]
The evening arrived in Greenvale and brought clouds along with it. Atlas stepped out of his pickup truck into the cool evening air. thought still wearing his dress slacks and shoes, he replaced his dress shirt with a black t-shirt. He note many of the usual bikes parked in front of the bar, glowing various different colors under the neon dart board that read "SWERY 65". "First, the Galaxy of Terror, then the SWERY 65. Why do the bars in Greenvale have names that make no sense" he thought, then pushed it out of his mind in favor of beer.
He walked into the bar and looked around. Plenty of people fresh from work were already there, talking about a variety of different topics. Many were just there to have some beer and food, though some were feeling more competitive. Atlas reached into his pocket and felt his dart gun. If there was any competition tonight, he'd be ready.
For now, he needed a drink to settle in. He say at the bar and waited for a bartender.

Emily wearily pushed through SWERY 65's entrance, boy was she glad her day was finally over. She was still rather annoyed about how department staff meeting went this afternoon. They didn't get anything substantial done and George was none too pleased by her suggestion of bringing Agent Henning on board. George was adamant that one city boy meddling in Greenvale affairs was quite enough!
She could tell Thomas was keen on her suggestion, at first, but wasn't surprised that he quickly changed opinion when he saw how displeased George was with the whole idea. She can't say she was surprised, Thomas would rather eat her cooking if it meant he didn't have to go against George's wishes.
The jukebox was baring and the bar was hoping with with activity inside. Emily nodded to several of the regulars as she walked by and took a seat at the end of the bar and waited to grab the bartender's attention.

Atlas ordered a beer from the bartender. The bartender once again carded Atlas. "I'm practically a regular here and so are you, can't you just skip carding me for once?" he thought, rolling his eyes. Still, he pulled out his driver's license to prove he was in fact over 21. Once he was verified, the bartender got him a pint of beer.
Atlas sipped the foam off the top of his beer as he reflected on the day. "Man, I wasn't expecting to see so many people at the graveyard. maybe one person mourning or even the gravekeeper." he thought. He glanced around and a blonde woman sitting at the end of the bar. From the look if it, she has just gotten out of work and still in her tan uniform. He had seen her a couple times before, but never talked to her.
"She's quite cute. I wonder if she'd be interested in a game of darts.

Emily finally got the bartenders attention and ordered a beer. She wasn't sure but she got the feeling whenever she ordered a cocktail here it was a virgin. She needed some alcohol and a bottled beer seemed like the safest bet. You know she's going to have to bring it up her concern with the owner one of these days...
With a cold bottled beer in hand she glanced over at the dart boards. It's funny all this time coming to SWERY 65 and she has yet to try her had at the game. This surprised her now that she thought about it. Playing with a dart gun intrigued her, if it's anything like shooting a real gun she should be a pro. It's a wonder she hadn't tried it before.
Feeling someone's eyes on her she looked to her right and saw a young man with a t-shirt and dress slacks...odd combo. She smiled and asked he was drink or in hope to beat the owner's high dart score.

Atlas has turned back when the lady glanced over at him. Though he could certainly hold his own in a court room, talking to women was a different manner. He noticed that she was coming and recognized the uniform: she was a Deputy Sheriff for the Greenvale Police Department. She seemed friendly enough though, and has asked him a question.
"Well, for the most part, I'm here relaxing with a cold beer." He responded. "Though I do plan on doing some darts."
He wanted to get to know her a bit better. He had heard whispers around town about a murder that took place, though he hadn't found out who yet. He himself was curious about the murder.
"By the way, let me introduce myself. Atticus Lasseter, Attorney at Law. My friends call me Atlas." he introduced, holding out his hand for a shake "And you are?"

Emily took Atlas' hand in a firm grip and gave it a shake.
"Hi Atlas! I'm Emily Wyatt, Greenvale Deputy Sheriff, but please just call me Emily everyone around here does."
She took a seat next to the Lawyer and saw him stiffen slightly.
Hmm I wonder if it's the uniform, some people have trouble talking to cops.
Emily gave Atlas another warm smile, "Atticus, that's an interesting name! Were your parents fans of the novel To Kill a Mocking Bird?"

Atlas had felt nervous at first around Emily at first. When she had sat closer to him, he couldn't help but stiffen up. However, her warm smile calmed him down a bit. "Even in uniform, she's a everyday person like you and I. I'm glad Greenvale's Police are a lot more sociable than their city counterparts."
Her question was interesting, but he had to correct her. "I'm glad you think so. Actually, it was my favorite book. As a child, books and movies were my best friends. I loved the book To Kill a Mockingbird so much, I had my name legally changed to Atticus after I passed the bar exam." He replied and sipped his beer. "He's part of the reason I became a lawyer." There was more to it, but it was rather sensitive.
He tried to change the subject. "I see you just came from work. I've heard the Greenvale Police Department was busy with something big." he said, avoiding the use of the word murder."

Emily hesitated and began to slowly pick at the the label on her bottle. Well not like it's a secret who died.
Not meeting Atlas' eyes she said, "Yes...Anna's death really caught everyone off guard. Such a shame, she was so young."
She didn't want to go back over the case. Lord knows she had enough this afternoon. She still sees Anna's nude body strung across that tree.
Emily couldn't suppress a shiver at the memory and quickly changed the subject.
"So how are you at darts? I was thinking of trying my hand tonight. After all I'm been coming here for years and haven't really given it a whirl all this time. Well that's kinda a lie..." Emily gave Atlas a little smile.
"Some of the guys on the force brought me here to celebrate my birthday last year and I got a little...tipsy. If I remember correctly I shot one of them in the foot and I can't remember much after that. Needless to say I haven't tried it since then."
Hmm could be why my drinks have been virgin lately now that I think about it.
"I'm curious to see what all the fuss is about, you know? Are you up for a game? I promise I won't cause any injuries this time around!"

The question had not gone over well with Emily. However, Atlas was not exactly able to read this. He was ready to get more details when Emily changed the subject to darts.
"I've played a round of two since I moved to Greenvale." Atlas replied. "Nowhere near close to beating the owner's high score, but I've been getting better."
He chuckled at Emily's story about shooting a guy in the foot with a dart. "Well, at least it wasn't your actual gun. That could have been unpleasant. Still, operating any kind of firearm under the influence can lead to a disaster. My brother Guy once went to a shooting range and a man there with a Desert Eagle had one whiskey too many. Needless to say I was representing one of the other patrons there a week later."
"However, I shall take you up on your offer for a game." He took his dart gun out of his pocket. "I came prepared anyways."

Emily laughed, "Yeah good thing, I probably would have been put on suspension, Deputy or not! Needless to say I got a good ribbing by my co-workers for weeks. Though George, the Sheriff, didn't think it was that funny. Kept a close eye on my drinking after that. But seriously, no harm done in the end. The guy I hit, Lawrence, was drunk as a skunk too and well...he told me the following day he didn't feel a thing! It's become a running joke between the two of us."
When Emily saw Atlas' dart gun she was a little surprised. Ooo boy! We got a pro here! I hope I don't make a complete fool of myself this time!
"Oh wow, you already have a gun! Give me a sec I need to rent one for myself."
Emily turned to get the bartender's attention and asked Atlas, "So what do you think, loser buys another round?" When she saw a look of fear flash over Atlas, she waved a dismissive hand and chuckled. "I promise no foot injuries this time around! First sign of seeing double I'm calling it quits!"

"Indeed." Atlas replied. "When you're busy dealing with aches all over from a hangover, a dart to the foot seems like less of a concern."
He noted that she seemed surprised that he had his own dart gun, when many people would just rent one. "I wonder why people rent things. You buy it once, and never have to worry about paying again." He thought. "Ok, maybe if you just use it once, but I'd rather stay prepared."
He saw Emily turn to the bartender to rent a dart gun, then make a bet with him. "As much as I don't need feet to do lawyering, I'd rather not have a dart to the foot." he thought, a bit nervous. "However, if I keep an eye on her, I can prevent the same mistake from happening twice."
"You're on, Emily. But I'm keeping an eye on you."

Emily paid for her rental and smiled at Atlas, "Awesome! Believe me I can use a little friendly competition about now, just to get my mind off things!"
She turned and gestured toward the nearest dart board and said, "Okay cowboy, let's see what you got!" She gave Atlas a wink she added, "I'm sure we can give Richard a run for the money for the high score if we put our minds to it!"

"Of course. Not only are we competing against eachother, but also against the owner and his high score." Atlas responded as he loaded three darts into his gun. He took a sip of beer and went up to the machine. "Even if one of us beats it, I'll be a happy camper. Even if we don't, I'll still be a happy camper." He took aim with his dart gun and held his breath. "Now remember, breathing is one of the most important parts of marksmanship" he heard his brother's voice. He squeezed and hit the single twenty. "A little off but not bad"He did the same again, but this time, hit the triple twenty. "Better. Now for the tricky part."Two arrows flashed on the board. The Seventeen and the Sixteen. These were crucial to Atlas. He held his breath and concentrated. Once he had his shot, he squeezed and allowed the dart to fly towards the triple seventeen, earning him a good amount of points. "Perfect."He turned to Emily. "Your turn. Good luck" he said, smiling. ((This topic needs some ambiance))

[playing the dart theme ] Pretty high score, no where near Richard's high score but definitely respectable. Okay girl, you got your work cut out for you. You can do this! Pretend it's target practice at the Sheriff Station and if you don't get the bulls-eye you'll hear it from George for a week!.Emily concentrated and aimed for the triple twenty but missed hitting a double instead. Darn it! Well at least it's not a single! After just a few shots her heart rate was pumping. I need to calm down! I have 900...not too shabby but I need to really focus, if I want to win this! Emily slowed her breathing and glanced over to Atlas who had a smirk on his face HA! Probably thinks this is the best I can do...well I'll show him! With her last couple darts she managed to gain another 250 points but unfortunately missed the last bulls-eye. Emily sighed, she was so close yet so far! Atlas still beat her by 20 points. She turned to gave Atlas a smile, "Well I guess drinks are on me! What will you have Robin Hood, care to share your darts playing secret?"

He watched Emily take her shots with the dart gun. "Let's see how our Deputy Sheriff does." he thought.
Her shots weren't bad. However, he was confident he had this in the bag. "Sorry, Emily, but it appears the beers will be on you tonight." he thought.
He and Emily took turns shooting darts. As the game progressed, his breathing became more erratic and his shots were not as accurate. Emily managed to catch up a bit with 250 points in the last round, but missed the last bullseye. He had won 20 points ahead.
He let loose a couple of breaths. "Not bad. We didn't manage to come close to Richard's score, but it was good."
"As for my secret, I don't really have one, other than playing this game whenever I come. For the most part, it's things such as breathing and trigger pull that you learn at a firing range. If my brother were here, he'd win easy."
He let Emily buy some beers for the two of them. He held his glass up.
"A toast to marksmanship. May we one day rest at the top of the scoreboard."
