"Awesome" Atlas said "I'm not exactly a pool shark myself, so you'll be fine."
Atlas followed Tamika over to the pool table to announce the rules.
"Alright, it will be Emily and I vs Charlotte and Tamika. Each player takes turns taking shots. Standard pool rules apply."
He offer Emily the first shot.
"After you, Emily."

Emily gave a little nervous smile, "Okay here goes nothing!" lined up the shot, leaned over the table and a said mental prayer...
Please let me break this okay!
She had visions of missing the cue ball completely resulting in her pool cue ripping through the green felt just like in one those cartoons.
Fortunately someone heard her prayers. The cue balls scattered every which way around the table, several resting near the left corner pocket, though unfortunately none had gone in.
Turning to her partner she inquired, "Hmm does this make it your shot now Atlas? Or is it the end of our turn?"

Atlas looked up at Emily, who just finished her shot.
"This means that either Charlotte or Tamika shoots next. Then I shoot, then whoever didn't shoot before goes, and back again in that order."
He then lowered his voice a bit so only Emily could hear.
"Don't worry, you'll do fine." he said in an encouraging voice.

Charlotte shrugged.
“I guess I’ll go.”
She circled the pool table, looking for the best shot. Finally deciding (6, right corner pocket), she took the shot. As it sank in the pocket, Charlotte turned to the others.
“Looks like we’re solids.”
Her next shot was a bust.
“Your turn, Atticus.”

Atlas cocked the pool cue as though it were a shotgun.
"Alright, 10 stripe, prepare for a depth charge." he thought as he aimed the pool cue, ready to launch the ball.
He took a couple practice shouts, then send the cue ball careening. It sunk the 10 ball. "Ace" he thought and shot again for the 9 ball. However, he was not successful.
"Looks like you're up, Tamika."

Tamika held the pool cue a bit awkwardly. She had no idea what she was doing and just prayed she wouldn't screw up too badly. Taking a deep breath, she aimed for the 7 ball, which was kind of near the left corner hole. She successfully hit the 7 ball with the cue ball, but only managed to knock it closer to the hole.
"Emily's turn, right?"

Emily gave the pool cue a little twirl and took aim at the closest striped ball and hit the ball a little too hard. To her horror the striped ball flew completely off the table and landed some where in the bar area.
Emily looked to her companions, mouth hung open with wide eyed surprise "I can't believe that just happened." and laughed.
Still laughing she walked down the the stairs to retrieve the lost ball, "I hope there wasn't any casualties. I assume it's Charlotte's turn, yes?"

Charlotte could help but laugh as Emily’s shot knocked the ball off the table and into the bar.
“If it makes you feel any better, Emily, when I first started playing pool I... sort of accidentally hit the ball off the table and into a guy’s...” she coughed, and shrugged sheepishly. “Well, let’s just say he shrieked and fell to the floor like I shot him.”
She circled the table, and decided on her next shot. This one’s going to have to be a little precise. She hit the 12 ball, bouncing it off the cushions... until it gently knocked the 7 ball into the pocket. A bit of adjustment, and she sent the 4 ball into the middle right pocket. Her third shot, however, was another bust.
“Your move Atticus,” Charlotte said, leaning on her pool cue with a grin.

"Thank you Charlotte" Atlas said as he cocked his pool cue like a shotgun. "Time for a depth charge." he said as he aimed his pool cue. The cue ball sat in anticipation, waiting for the pool cue.
"And....FIRE!" he said as he knocked the pool ball. The 10 ball slammed into the whole, leaving the cue ball to bounce around, striking the stray 11 ball into a hole and the 15 near one. However, his next shot left him with a blank.
"Drag." Atlas said. "Looks like Tamika is up."

"Right..." Tamika walked around the table and aimed her pool cue. This time she hit the cue ball with more force and managed to knock the 2 and, to her shock, the 12 ball into a hole. Her next shot was a bust.
"Emily's turn."

Emily took aim at the 15 ball (closest one to the pocket) and took the shot and surprisingly she made it in! Yay!
Encouraged by a successful shot she then tried for ball number 11 but had no luck...but she set it up nicely for Atlas to sink the shot during his turn.
Turning to Charlotte she said, "Your turn!" and then asked,"So tell me how long have you been playing pool?"

Charlotte grinned at Emily, as she circled around the table figuring out her shot.
"I got my first taste of pool early. We had a pool table in the basement, and my Dad taught me the basics. I had to stand on a box to be able to reach the table, but it was totally worth it."
Okay... 3 ball corner pocket.
"After he died though... I sort of avoided playing for a long time. I started playing again at college. Took me a while to get back into the swing of things."
She took the shot... and hit the 3 ball almost too softly. It teetered at the edge of the pocket for a long moment, before tumbling it. Her next shot, the 5 ball center pocket, unfortunately was another bust.
Laughing, she turned to the lawyer.
"You're up, Atticus," Charlotte said, taking a drink of Guinness.

"Alright, let's do this thing." he said enthusiastically.
He took aim. "13 stripe, your ass is mine." he said as he lined up the shot. Bust.
"Blast." he said.
The game seesawed back and forth. Both teams sunk balls until only the eight ball remained. It was the only ball on the field besides the cue ball and it was Atlas's turn.
"Alright, let's do this." he said. He aimed the cue ball and fired. Unfortunately, the eight ball remained stubborn.
"Well Tamika, you're up."

"Great, no pressure, right?" Tamika aimed carefully and slammed cue ball into the eight ball. The eight bounced of the sides of the table erratically until it finally stopped pretty close to the right corner pocket. "Son of a bitch, " she muttered under her breath.
"All yours Emily."

Emily's eyes grew wide, she thought for sure Tamika would make that shot and take the game! Looks like it's up to her now good thing Tamika set up an easy shot
Emily took a deep breath willing herself not to choke under pressure made the hit. To her relief the 8 ball sunk easily into the right corner pocket.
It went in! In the pocket...we..we...WON?!
Emily's face broke into a huge grin and she turned to Atlas. She wasn't sure if it was the thrill of winning or her earlier alcohol intake but she found it was hard to contain her enthusiasm and surprised the man with an exuberant hug!
"We did it partner!" She let go of Atlas and looked over at the red heads. "This calls for a celebration, we finished a game and I didn't kill anyone with a flying cue ball! You guys up for a snack from the bar? My treat!"
