Agent Henning was by nature a cautious man. Though there was no real need to do so, he had already checked the bottom of the phone for taps, and even looked behind each and every one of the forty-three (he'd counted) framed photographs and paintings hanging on the walls of the hotel room. The place was clean, free of bugs... The electronic variety, at least. He'd caught a spider under his water glass during his routine inspection, and after unpacking what little baggage he'd brought with him to Greenvale, Henning sat on his bed and watched it trying to clamber up the smooth walls of its transparent prison.
It was a pitiful sight... Feeling sorry for the creature, he slipped an index card under the glass and opened a window. Leaning out, he removed the card and let the spider drift slowly down on its invisible thread into the leafy bushes below. Henning watched it disappear, then sat back, vaguely wishing this all too brief activity had taken more time. He was aware that there was a whole unexplored town waiting for him just outside the hotel walls, but part of him was feeling oddly reserved towards the sense of adventure he felt this ought to have cultivated.
Perhaps it was only his empty stomach affecting his mood. There was a small pamphlet on the desk advertising some of the local tourist attractions, a woefully short list. Henning browsed it cursorily; the pamphlet mentioned a few restaurants, and he was reminded that he hadn't eaten for almost seven hours. He pointed a finger at random: It landed on the third item listed, the A&G Diner.
Doesn't sound half bad, he thought, dropping the pamphlet on the desk and going in search of a tie. York certainly seems to be taking his sweet time, and there's no use waiting around when there's a killer on the loose...
