While Thomas drove to the -- not crime scene; evidence scene? -- he again wondered about how he should handle himself on the way. Sirens or no sirens? Let's see, they had just discovered human remains, so... there was murder? Maybe? But it was just one bone and whoever it belonged to was already dead. So, no sirens then? That seemed about right, it wasn't like they could save the victim.
... why was he a cop, again?
In the midst of all his inner rambling, he arrived to the 'scene' and parked the patrol car beside the curb near Emily's house.
"Emily!" he called out as he left the car. He ran over (if you could call that running) to her and was relieved to see she was handling procedure much better than he would on his own. "I'm sorry if I took too long..." he apologized before laying eyes on the sternum. The way it was lying on the bush made it look like it was a valuable curio on a pedestal.
"You... you weren't kidding." he said, at a loss for words, "That certainly is a human sternum." He wasn't an expert on bones or human anatomy, but it didn't take a doctor to figure it out that it wasn't from an animal. It also looked a little old, perhaps? Maybe that was just some dirt.
"Did you call anyone else?" he asked, turning his attention to Emily. He was thinking of the FBI agents in town. Was it too soon to call on them?

Paige crouched lower into the bush as she heard the sounds of an approaching car. This was one of the most exciting parts- when the rest of the cops showed up. Then they would really start investigating- maybe get the cool yellow tape out! Ooh, why did Super-Cop have to send her away? She could help!
The dog, at the sounds of the car pulling up, raised it's head, ears perked and nose twitching. Panicking, Paige tried to push it back down, but it was too late- the dog had caught the sent of a stranger in the area, and began to bark.
"Hey! Be quiet they'll hear-... us." Paige sighed, giving up. The dog was going wild now, rising out of the bush and charging at the newest arrival as fast as it could with it's injured leg.
Paige gulped and chased after it. She thought she recognised who the new person was, and if she remembered correctly...
Just able to catch up to it, the young girl grabbed at the dog by the neck, pushing it down moments before it collided into Thomas, and forcing the dog to sit. It complied reluctantly, sniffing at the young police officer's pants with interest.
Paige grinned sheepishly up at the two adults, "H-hey there Sleepy-Cop! Don't worry- he's a good doggy! He doesn't bite!"
She quickly ducked her head down, deliberately not looking at Emily. Oh, she was going to be soooo mad.

While Thomas was standing around, staring at the sternum dumbfoundedly again, he heard the sound of a dog barking near by. He tensed for a moment and had to conciously keep himself from reacting outwardly. He was a cop, he was a man! A dog was just a dog, just a smaller animal. There was nothing to worry about--
"Oh! N-NO!" his 'mantra' was immediately broken when he saw the mutt running at him and his reflexes manuvered his body into a very brave cowering position. He only noticed the small girl when she had managed to stop it from leaping onto him.
"Hah..." he stared at them both with a weak smile. He recognized the child as Emily's neighbor. "Hi, Paige. Is that... your dog?" he asked as he stood up straight again. Dear god, the beast was SNIFFING him. With its little canine nose.
"It really needs to be on a leash." he said, backing away as casually as he could. "And you... you should be inside your house..."
Wait, wait. Did she call him "Sleepy-Cop?" ... Well, that was better than Pansy-Cop, or Chicken-Cop.

"No, I found him in that bush!" Paige answered in a cheery tone, feinting innocence, but she kept her eyes away from Emily all the while, "We think he had the bone with him."
"Umm..." She lowered her head further, grinding the front of her shoe into the ground while the dog made a move to lick Thomas' hand. She could sense a Telling Off coming... "Well... my Dad said I could stay up for a bit longer, and well... I-I mean- I was helping too!" She added pleadingly, glancing at Emily.

"Well... I tried to call George be-" Emily's response was cut off by Paige and the pit-bull's sudden return. With her eyes wide in surprise and she quickly put herself in between Thomas and the pooch's sniffing muzzle. Emily knew Thomas was uneasy around dogs and right now the poor guy looked ready to bolt. Not like she blamed him, anyone would be uneasy around this big fella.
The dog was distracted by Emily's sudden appearance and was all too eager to switch his attention onto her. Emily used this opportunity to gently grab the dog by the scruff of the neck and then lead him a few paces away from Thomas. With her hand still on the dog in case he decided to bolt again for her friend she directed her attention to her disobedient little officer.
She let out a sigh and channeled a little of Sheriff Grumpy pants and said, "Deputy O'Brian! Didn't I just give you a direct order to head home. I need to to keep an eye on our witness here." Emily nodded towards the dog. "Just what do you think you are doing out back out here?"

...And here it comes... Paige stared gloomily back at the ground, still keeping a hold on the dog even as Emily led it away. The young girl sniffled at Emily's reprimand. Most people who tried to tell her off received a hearty counter-whinging, maybe even a tantrum (with fist-pounding included), but this was Super-Cop, and she was a Defender of Justice, and only stopped bad guys.
And she would, of course, have to use That voice. Her Dad wasn't very good at That voice, but her Mom had been, and she always knew to shut up and listen when someone used it right.
Now sniffling heavily, Paige turned her face, eyes wide and watery, to meet Emily's, looking surprisingly earnest, "I-I know you told me to go back home, b-but I wanted to help too! I couldn't miss it if you caught the Ghost! It would be too important to miss! And Batdog's the one who ran back anyway, so it's not all my fault. A-and I'm supposed to help 'vestigate 'cuz you made me a Deputy..." She added quietly, her small shoe idly kicking at the ground, "I'm sorryyyy..."

Emily had to bite the inside of her cheek to stop a grin that was threatening to appear on her face. A contrite little Paige was absolutely adorable but she had to stand her ground a possible real crime scene was no place for a little girl. God she hated being the "bad guy" but Paige did undermined her direct order.
Undermined? With that thought her mind flashed back to the argument she and George had in the office yesterday. Was this how he felt while she was so called "encouraging" the Agent's foolishness? Like Paige, she thought being candid with York would help the case and while George saw it as a slap to the face of his authority.
Emily mentally shook her head. No what happened yesterday was not at all normal. George was way out of line and a complete overreaction due to losing control of the case and-and well just thinking about it made Emily feel queasy.
Emily knelt down so she was eye level with Paige. "Sweetie, you were helping by keeping...uh Batdog? Er safe... Wouldn't Bat-Hound be more appropriate-OH God Todd must be really rubbing off on me if that was really the first thing I though of! If I ran into any trouble with a ghost I would of had Thomas go and fetch you first thing." Emily paused unsure of what to say next. She caught Thomas' eye and shot him a gave a silent plea for help in this situation.

Thomas stood back and watched the two of them talk. Paige's teary-eyed words were, quite honestly, making him feel so bad for her. He never thought about it much before, but he supposed he was one of those people that had a big soft spot for little kids...
When Emily looked at him for help, he blinked; what was he supposed to do? After a moment, he stepped forward and kneeled down so he could be closer to eye level with the young girl too. "It's okay... d-don't cry..." he spoke with a gentle (and uneasy) smile. "You haven't done anything wrong, you just made a mistake. That's all. It happens to all good deputies." he nodded. "What's important is that you learn from your mistakes. That's what makes a good deputy."
"When you're given an official order by someone like Deputy Wyatt here, you must listen to them. Okay?" He reached over to give Paige a very gentle pat on the head. "Now, it's time for you and... um..." he paused, looking over at the dog warily again, "Batdog..." What the hell was a Batdog? "... to go home where it's safe. Remember, your assignment is to look after him and make sure he stays out of trouble." And a way from me!

((I apologise for the later reply and the relatively insubstantial post. I wasn't too sure what to post. XD So I bring stupid doodles!
Paige in ghost-bustin' gear (with another unrelated doodle caught up in it. >>) i28.photobucket.com/albums/c227/Nuku-Chan/superdeputy.png
Meet Super-Cop! i28.photobucket.com/albums/c227/Nuku-Chan/supercop.png
Meet Sleepy-Cop! i28.photobucket.com/albums/c227/Nuku-Chan/Sleepycop.png
...Yeah. D8 ))The dog whined slightly, seeming more interested in trying to get back to licking Thomas' hand. Paige rubbed at her eyes, trying not to look too teary. She couldn't look like a complete Baby, not now! "I know I was 'sposed to..." She muttered. It had been a "Official Order", hadn't it? ...This wasn't going to go on her Record, was it?! "I-I still get to be a Deputy, right?" She questioned, her face looking suddenly panicked, "I still wanna join you guys! They're not gonna not let me join now, are they? What's going to happen now? Are you going to go catch it? I can go back inside with our Key Witness-" (She enjoyed saying those words. They sounded important!) "-If you promise to tell me what happens!" She stared at the two hard, attempting to look demanding, but couldn't hold the expression as a sudden thought lit up her face. "Oooh! Oooh! Will I get to see the FBI agent?! Is he gonna come? All the kids at school are talking about him- the one with the cool scar! Will you get me if he shows up? Pleeeaaase?"

[ Those doodles are awesome!!! I can't wait to see more ] Emily looked down at the dog who seemed eager to head back to Thomas and tightened her grip I don't think so buddy..."Of course you are still my Deputy sweetie! Trust me this isn't going on any record," then with a wink Emily added, "I won't tell soul!" Emily almost let out a giggle when Paige put on her "I'm serious guys!" expression. Fortunately Emily was able to hide her sudden mirth with a quick cough and a turn of her head. Then in a serious tone of her own Emily replied, "I also promise to fill you in on any ghost related detail while you guard our very important witness here-" Emily was about to say something else but was interrupted by Paige's sudden enthusiasm to meet York. "Agent York is a little tied up at the moment Paige so I won't be calling him in on this case, just yet!" I hope I won't have to at least one murder victim is enough thank you very much... Paige seemed a bit disheartened so Emily quickly added, "But! I promise to introduce you two when he is free. I'll see if I can set something up, I'm sure he would be happy to assist on our ghost hunt." York seemed the type to believe in the paranormal, Emily just hoped he would be willing to play along and not be his usual blunt self for Paige's sake!

Paige beamed at Emily, practically bouncing on her heels, "Really? You really mean it? Yay! I can't wait! It'll be just like that show with all the aliens and stuff! And you'd be like the lady that's always his partner- And Sleepy-Cop can come too! I bet you'd find loads of stuff in this town! I have all sorts of notes, if you need them," She added seriously, placing her hands on her hips in imitation of Emily, "I have a club! I should get all of you guys to join, 'cuz I find all sorts of things! Like in the Junkyard, there was this weird metal thing, and- and..."
The young girl broke mid-sentence, her face contorting as she tried desperately to stifle a yawn. And failing miserably, "And it h-had all these wires, and- I-I'm not tired! I dun wanna go back y-yet..." She broke off as another yawn surprised her. Meanwhile, the dog, looking thoroughly fed up with being restrained, renewed its efforts to tug against Emily's hold.
"Err, think my Dad will let me keep him just for a bit, maybe?" She added hesitantly, anticipating their inevitable reactions to her yawning. Grown-Ups were so predictable sometimes, even when they were awesome cops.
