Time: Day 2, Late Afternoon
Weather: Raining
Warnings: None.
Characters: Emily Wyatt
Emily was so very, very, very annoyed. So annoyed that she didn't think her right eye would ever stop twitching. She placed a hand and some pressure to the eye in a vain hope to calm it down but with her current companion, Todd Thorne, she knew it was a lost battle.
Because it was a "slow day today anyway" Todd felt that it was the perfect opportunity to come in and bug her. Didn't matter that she had left over paper work regarding last week's Milk Barn vandalism to finish which Anna's sudden murder the other day had pushed to the side.
The bane of her existence was currently perched on John O's desk in the middle of recounting one of his many, as he calls them, "kickass" traffic violation tales.
"And then I told him NO! You listen to me sir, I wasn't the one going 50 in a 30 z-"
She's heard this one just last week and had no desire to hear the rest, "Todd! Don't you have something else you could be doing?" She then gestured to the various police reports littering her desk,"I'm a little busy here!"
Todd glanced at her paper ridden desk and just rolled his eyes, "No you aren't..." Emily lifted an eyebrow and waved Keith Ingram's written statement a bit in his face. Todd however was not discouraged in the least, "Well not with anything important, the graffiti at the Milk Barn is hardly a pressing matter Em. Besides it's obvious it was the work of the Rea boys who else would write "REA for Life?"
He grinned and ran a hand through he short blonde hair, that Jessica the current intern thought was "soooo dreamy!" Emily inwardly rolled her eyes at the thought, like Todd needed a groupie to inflate his huge ego.
He continued, "Now if that mysterious and oh so tardy FBI Agent were here I would understand being busy. But from where I'm sitting I don't see any city boy here that needs your baby sitting."
Emily glared and Todd smirked.
To add further insult he reached a hand towards her crystal candy dish, "Hey can I have some of your jelly beans?" Emily didn't know why he bothered to ask since he didn't bother waiting for a reply before he snatched a a large handful. He popped several in his mouth, "Thanks!"
Emily narrowed her eyes at her now depleted dish and sneered at the man,"You sure that's wise TODD? I could have MADE THOSE and I don't know...what did you claim earlier? Oh yes, "purposefully poison you further?"
He just laughed, "Fat chance! I know these babies are store bought and non toxic. They aren't burnt or congealed so in my mind they are perfectly safe to consume!"
Emily frown deepened, I need to remember to hide my candy when he's in the room, he'll eat my entire Jelly Belly stash by himself!
With a sigh, she sadly moved the empty dish into her top drawer of her desk. She had no plans of tempting fate and have Todd knock it off her desk by accident. Her mother gave her this crystal dish for her birthday the year of her death. If it broke Emily's heart would shatter right along with it.
When the dish was safely tucked away Emily turned and placed her hands on her hips, a sure sign she was losing patience and her cool.
"Todd! It may not seem important in light of the recent violence but it still needs to get done. George was adamant I finish it today!"
Todd nodded," Uh huh...not surprising, I heard you were tardy today Missy and boy was the big man was P'Oed! Guess no one is safe from his bad mood, not even you Em!" After a bark of laughter he leaned in an in a mock whisper said, "Hot date last night am I right?" He nudged her playfully with his elbow several times and continued to geode her, "Eh? Eh? Eehhhhhhh?" This was also punctuated with an comical wiggle of his eye brows.
Emily pursed her lips and took a quick glance at George's closed office door and cut her eyes back to Todd, "No! If you must know, I was playing pool and darts at SWERY65 and just lost track of time. I slept through my alarm, that is all."
Todd looked thoroughly disappointed by the answer, "Well that's no fun, Em! I was hoping it was the result of something scandalous! I could hear George clear down the hall in reception I was hoping you were at least hung over or something!"
Todd turned and gestured to the closed office door, "You have any idea if he's is a better mood? I was hoping to take off early and catch the beginning of the football game..."
Before she could assure him that George was in fact still in quite a foul mood, the big man himself ripped open the door and roared, "THOMAS! GET IN HERE!"
Thomas' soft and hurried steps where heard coming down the hall and with George's sudden appearance Todd to jumped up from his seat on the desk and stared intently at the half finished vandalism reports over Emily's shoulders.
Not going to work Todd...
When George spotted the pair his eyes narrowed which caused Todd to take a involuntary gulp.
Todd made a nervous glance down at Emily and gave her a pat on the shoulder, "Ah er..well Emily! Now like I said before, I'm busy and can't help you finish your work. I have calls to take...you see..."
Emily jumped from her seat and whirled on Todd, seething, "Excuse me?! HELP ME? You're the one-" but her protest died on her lips when George locked her in his piercing gaze which seemed to say, Save it Wyatt, you have a job to finish and you are on thin ice with me already! Sit your ass back down.
Emily could feel the pin pricks of tears form ingin the back of her eyes and her face flush. Don't cry, don't cry. Stupid Todd! Make me look like an incompetent fool. Now I'm in even more hot water! This day can't get any worse. I should have just stayed in bed and pretended I was sick!
Thomas arrived and George was momentarily distracted. Todd saw this as his chance to make he quick escape and darted for the exit. He shot Emily a grin and gave a shrug that seemed to say, Well what did you expect me to do? I didn't want to die . However as he slunk past the big boss, George whopped him on the back of the head.
"GET TO WORK!"
The shocked look on Todd's face almost made Emily smile, Serves you right! Jerk! Todd rubbed his head, scowled and glanced back in Emily's direction. George had given Thomas his full attention so she took the chance stuck her tongue out at Todd.
Todd seemed like he was going to make a face back but he caught George looking his way once again so he quickly ran out the door. No need for a second knock on the head!
George frowned and turned to look back at Emily who quickly looked down at her desk. No need to incur more of George's wrath today!
She held her breath and didn't breathe again until George and Thomas were safely behind George's closed office door.
Letting out a sigh Emily thought 5:00pm couldn't come soon enough!
